Local Shops

To help you enjoy your stay, here are some recommendations for places to shop, most within a half-hour drive of The Shuteslades. Hatherleigh is only 10 minutes away, Okehampton 25 minutes.

Hatherleigh Market   (Tuesdays only - early is better)
The Hatherleigh market has been an important feature of the local economy for a century or more. It's the place where farmers come to auction their livestock and produce, buy new breeding stock and sell their produce to the local people - not that visitors aren't welcome by any means. Much more than just an opportunity to buy first class, locally produced meat, poultry, fruit and vegetables, the sights and sound of this vibrant gathering will entrance the kids too, with the livestock displays often akin to a zoo in light of the sheer variety of animals, birds and poultry on display. Be warned - you may go home with an unusual pet if you're not careful!

Local Butchers   There are two excellent butchers in Hatherleigh - Newcomes in the high street is a traditional butcher's shop - sawdust on the floor, marble counters - but we also recommend Edwards, based in a small building just outside the town which features a spectacular range of local produce. (Ask us for directions to Edwards - it's well worth the visit).

Fruit and Vegetables   In Hatherleigh, you can always find a reasonable selection of fruit and veg in the Co-op. Better still, why not have vegetables delivered in boxes or bags straight to the door of The Shuteslades by Hallwood Fresh Veg. Run by Ruth and Richard Kelsey, their produce is grown just down the road and you can contact them on 01837 811762 or visit their web site at www.hallwoodfreshveg.co.uk.

Okehampton also has several grocers as well as Waitrose, Somerfields and Lidl.

General Supplies

Hatherleigh has a very nice little Co-op mini-supermarket with a surprisingly good range of household goods, food and drink, and sells newspapers and rents videos and DVDs. There is also a traditional newsagents and sweet shop, a delicatessen, a bakers and if you need wellies, waterproof gear or heavy duty gate post fixings, try Devon and Cornwall Farmers next to The George pub.

Supermarkets   The nearest supermarkets are in Okehampton (11 miles), where there is a new and extensive Waitrose, a Somerfields and a Lidl. In Exeter - a 45 minute drive away - you will find a Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons and several other supermarkets.

Shopping further afield   For a good shopping excursion, the City of Exeter is the place to go. With a superb 11th Century cathedral, a packed high street featuring a Debenhams department store, Liberty, Gap, Waterstones, Marks & Spencers, HMV, Game and Dixons. If you are interested in musical instruments or need guitar strings or drumsticks, Mansons is an excellent music shop. Of course, there is also the inevitable McDonalds and Burger King but rather better might be the many small restaurants and cafes which help to create a relaxed, safe environment in which to spend some time. There is also a large trading estate on the way in to the city called the Marsh Barton estate, with hundreds of out of town shops, businesses and services (if you like a good bottle of wine, check out the Majestic Wine Warehouse). Parking in Exeter is usually fairly easy (and relatively cheap - relative to London anyway) with a number of car parks in the city centre as well as a good park and ride service from the outskirts of town. Exeter St. Davids main line train station is well served, with regular trains to London, Birmingham, Plymouth etc.
